We always tend to think moon as a beautiful structure in space which is shown in movies and through other means. But the thing to know is that we always see only one side of the moon and the other side is completely into darkness which we never knew about, but now we do have information about it.
This is because earth and moon are tidally locked which was not the case several million years ago. The surface of the far side of the moon does differ from the nearer side by a bit. An interesting thing about the far side is that is has complete radio silence and no humans signals reach there whereas all kinds of signals by humans could be detected on the nearer side as we know we are a very noisy species and give out energy is all directions in space which also tells status of our scientific capabilities.
No highly advanced species would let the energy go waste in space and hence will have a far superior method of conserving it.
Due to this reason the far side of the moon is really useful for us to carry out astrophysical experiment for example; searching for extraterrestrial radio signals.
Recently Chinese have sent a robotic lander there as we speak. I hope once the Chandrayan 3 mission is successful where India will target the south pole region of the moon, we will be ambitious enough to send a mission to the far side too.
